As part of the November experimental pop-up display, we are finally presenting our house artist, Saša Vrabič. On view is a selection of prints from last year’s series Nova plošča, produced at the local International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC), alongside a new painting titled Gemini Research, which announces the artist’s forthcoming series of monochrome portraits. Joining the presentation as a curatorial supplement is the photographic work Reference to a Reference by Iva Suhadolnik Gregorin.

In highlighting Saša Vrabič and his yet-unseen works, the pop-up presents itself as a subtle subversion, or rather, a conceptual upgrade, that positions the primary artist in dialogue with the medium and production of a younger generation.
The canvas, depicting a scene from a South Korean gallery, continues the artist’s long-standing interest in burnt-out, detached, weary, addicted individuals—those tethered to their mobile phones. The accompanying silkscreen prints portray anonymous figures at the peak of enviable sleep. Labour, individualism, overexertion, and capitalism merge with the perverse fantasy of rest in the symbolic totem of (Asian) instant noodles. The photograph by Iva Suhadolnik Gregorin, whose practice questions the fetishisation of labour (and of the artist) as well as the right to laziness, not only addresses these themes but also—critically, humorously, and with a hint of despair—comments on its own existence and the very exhibition format it inhabits.
