Round Table Discussion - CARE: What Kind of Environment Do We Want to Live In and How Can We Co-Decide About It?

May 22, 2025

Join us at the Oton Župančič Library for two discussions exploring key questions about the future of our rivers and the role of civil society in environmental protection:

Round Tables:
-The Importance of Free-Flowing Rivers, European Guidelines, and Living in the Valley
-Civil Society and Environmental Democracy

In contemporary democratic society, marked by neo-capitalism, the interests of the public, the environment, capital , and politics often clash. Reaching fair and meaningful decisions that accommodate capital interests, broader and local communities, and preserve the environment for future generations is a demanding task involving many stakeholders.

Local communities and individuals can engage in decision-making about their environment through various tools—such as actions, petitions, and civil initiatives—supported by the legal framework. Public authorities and non-governmental organizations are also part of these discussions.

This round table aims to shed light on the processes and wider issues of co-decision-making, as well as to highlight specific cases where adequate solutions have yet to be found. We will focus on how to care for our watercourses, what it means to live in a river valley, and what dangers threaten these spaces. We will also discuss the Ljubljana C0 canal case and the challenges faced by residents of Kozjak.
