Arjan Pregl - Fountain
150 cm x 120 cm
2023
Arjan Pregl (1973) constantly responds to what is happening in society via his painting practice. Sometimes it seems that his images appear as ironic caricatures or prophetic memes, all-the-while maintaining a complex structure of meanings and painting techniques for deceptive simplicity. His last oil paintings of various formats are distinguished by the precise application of paint around the contours of seemingly simple, unencumbered drawings, first created in one of his sketchbooks. Only a handful of such drawings are upgraded into technically perfect paintings, which are connected by recognisable, yet often intentionally contradictory links to the works of famous masters, different iconography and an understanding of painting tropes. His paintings are colourful, haptic, the figures depicted are stylized, bold, engaging, shameless, occasionally humorous, but also aggressive and directly sexual. The painter upgrades seriously ironic, relaxedly elaborate, ambiguously direct works with a sprinkling of theory and Internet gems. Modernity and burning social contradictions such as protests, erotic scandals, war, various movements, global warming, control, patriotism, nihilism, fascism and death are treated with ambiguity and irony.
