Mito Gegič - Red Threshold

272 cm x 215 cm

2023

In his paintings, Mito Gegič (1982) uses various adhesive tapes, which he paints, overlayers and reconstructs from one canvas to another. This specific, distinctive and recognisable process of building the image allows for greater tactility, airiness, chimney-like formation and evokes feelings of random fragmentedness. This kind of creative process is extremely long and requires a substantial amount of patience and a fantastic degree of precision. The images he uses in his works are found online or in photographs, then collaged and transferred onto the canvas. The central theme is hunting and a socio-political commentary on human treatment of nature and unbalanced power relations. Gegič’s works question the deeply rooted tradition of hunting in Slovenia and imaginatively combine the concept with current local content and ethical concerns, such as the migrant crisis, toxic masculinity, and the animal industry. This is often reflected in monumental, horrifying and cold images of captured deer and traps. In recent years, the latter have been transformed into slightly more colourful and considerably more ambivalent narratives filled with cynical contrast.
